The rewiring of a property is necessary beceuse electrical cables degrade with age, modern PVC twin and earth cables are designed to last between 50 and 70 years if they are installed and correctly and inspected frequently. These P.V.C. cables have been in use since the mid 1970’s. But there are tens of thousands of properties in the U.K. that do not have modern wiring systems installed in them. These properties could have older wiring systems manufactured from; V.I.R. cables, rubber cables or cables with aluminium conductors. V.I.R. and rubber cables are constructed from different kinds of rubber, they are both prone to becoming brittle with age and overloading due to inadequate over current protection, such as rewireable fuses. When wiring systems become brittle the insulation protecting the copper conductor starts to break down, this in turn leads to the wiring shorting out and can cause an electrical fault or worst case a fire. Aluminium conductors are prone to erosion if they come into contact with copper conductors and an electric current is passed between them. Unless a special compound was applied to the joint when it was first terminated erosion will start to occur. This degradation is known as electrolysis and it can be a major safety concern as the conductors gradually wear each other away. If your wiring system is aluminium and you have had alterations carried out to it with copper cabling you should seek expert advice to ensure the integrity of the installation.

If your wiring systems are the types mentioned above, there is also likelihood that you have an old out dated consumer unit with rewireable fuses and inadequate R.C.D. protection, as well as out dated earthing arrangements for your premises. Electrical faults can go undetected for years unless they are periodically inspected and tested. It is a well known fact that people are reluctant to have regular electrical  inspections carried out, because everything seems to be operating correctly. One of the most important factors about an electrical installation is that it operates correctly under fault conditions e.g. disconnecting the supply quickly and safely before any permanent damage is caused to the integrity of the wiring system. A periodic electrical inspection can identify faults and determine if your installation is starting to deteriorate, or whether it will function correctly under fault conditions.
